Lithuanian scientists’ revolutionary discovery will help save thousands of lives

A multidisciplinary group of Lithuanian scientists led by Prof. Arminas Ragauskas, head of the Research Laboratory of Telematics at the Kaunas University of Technology, invented the first non-invasive device for monitoring intracranial pressure and thus solved a puzzle the World’s brightest minds had been struggling with for over a century. The breakthrough technology will help head injury doctors save thousands of lives and will take astronauts a step further in long distance space travel. The device been patented in Europe, the US, and Japan and mass production should start in the nearest future. It still remains for the team to secure sufficient funding, decide on the product design, and obtain CE and FDA certificates. Currently the project is supported by the European Commission and several US agencies, but high hopes are placed in Horizon 2020, the soon-to-be-launched EU program designed specifically for spin-offs and start-ups. Prof. Ragauskas and his team have gained international recognition: they are talking with General Electric Medical, Philips Medical, and NASA, are winning EC projects, and receive funding from the US Department of Defense, yet the Kaunas scientists take pride in retaining all intellectual property rights in Lithuania.
