Currently Prof. Kluša carries out pharmacological and neurochemical studies on novel neuroprotectants and cognition enhancers, researching their cellular targets and regenerative abilities.Prof. Kluša is a neuroscientist/ neuropharmacologist and a Full Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. Her fields of interest include: Molecular Pharmacology, Neuropharmacology, and Neurochemistry; Neuropeptides, Neuroprotectants, and Cognition Enhancers; and Bioethics.
She is currently Professor and Head of Pharmacology at the University of Latvia Faculty of Medicine, and Professor at the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis since 1993.
She has been working at the Institute of Organic Synthesis since 1968: as Junior Research Associate until 1974; Senior Research Associate 1974-1978; Head of the Laboratory of Pharmacology 1987- 1998, and Head of the Laboratory of Peptide Molecular Biology and Pharmacology 1978-1987.
In the early 90's she researched Immunopeptide thymopentin as a novel neuroregulatory peptide. In the 80's - Peptide and protein fragments and their linear and cyclic analogues as neuroimmunomodulators. In the 70's she studied the structure-activity relationships of peptides (angiotensin, bradykinin, thyroliberin).
1974-1990 Prof. Vija Kluša was Supervisor of screening programmes on new drug studies at the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis (angiotensinamide, midantane, acetylcysteine, desaminooxytocin. pentagastrin, dihypramine, cerebrocrast etc.). and in the 60's she carried she studies new N-cholinergic compounds, myorelaxant Dioxonium.
She is the author of more than 250 publications, 3 monographs; over 500 conference abstracts, 9 patents, about 50 popular articles, and 3 collections of papers. She is also a co-author of the Scientist's Code of Ethics (1998, Latvian Academy of Sciences, Latvian Council of Sciences).
